| Did you catch anything for breakfast? Friday I went to the beach to spend some quiet time with the Lord and enjoy the day. I usually learn a lesson or two while I am there. I was watching a man surf fishing. The waves were high and he looked so small against the backdrop of the mighty ocean. My thoughts went to John 21 where a few of the disciples went fishing. Here is the scripture from the Message translation. John 21:2 -6 Simon Peter, Thomas (nicknamed "Twin"), Nathanael from Cana in Galilee, the brothers Zebedee, and two other disciples were together. Simon Peter announced, "I'm going fishing." The rest of them replied, "We're going with you." They went out and got in the boat. They caught nothing that night. When the sun came up, Jesus was standing on the beach, but they didn't recognize him. Jesus spoke to them: "Good morning! Did you catch anything for breakfast?" They answered, "No." He said, "Throw the net off the right side of the boat and see what happens." They did what he said. All of a sudden there were so many fish in it, they weren't strong enough to pull it in. I was reminded of the church. Many have been fishing with little or no results. We think, where is the harvest? Why aren’t more people here? The truth for many is that they work very hard with little results. Just like the disciples in the above scripture. They fished all night with no results. We can toil all night and walk end up walking in disappointment. But there is hope. As we read above. When the sun came up, Jesus was standing on the beach. He called to them and they answered him. Yet they didn’t yet know who he was. Jesus then said, "Throw the net off the right side of the boat and see what happens." So they did what Jesus said. All of a sudden there were so many fish in their net, they weren't strong enough to pull it in. Wouldn’t you like to see a harvest like that in your church? I believe that the sun has come up over the church. This is the year we see Jesus standing close enough for us to hear him clearly. Even though we are busy doing what we know what to do. He may say to you, “Cast your net on the other side and see what happens.” You might be asked to do something that doesn’t make sense to you. Think about it, these disciples were fishermen. To cast their net on another side of a boat didn’t make sense. But they heard and were obedient. Then they were a participant in a miracle. Through disappointments and heartache we can still hear the voice of the Lord. If we hear His voice and obey, we will see miracles. Is it time to cast our nets on the other side? I think this is the year to do it. Is the Lord trying to get our attention to do something new? We have to listen with a humble heart. Can we change our routine by faith? Yes, If we are willing. How strong is our faith? Only you can answer that. Are we willing to listening for His voice in all areas of our lives? Isaiah 43:18 & 19 "Forget about what's happened; don't keep going over old history. Be alert, be present. I'm about to do something brand-new. It's bursting out! Don't you see it? There it is! I'm making a road through the desert, rivers in the badlands. |
